FLUX—Six Artists Respond to Uncertainty explores the experience of uncertainty, upheaval, and unrest. The artists, all women, offer specific reactions to impact and change, each with a unique scope. Some look inward to explore and affirm personal history, autonomy, and authenticity in the face of a changing world. Others look around at the evolving landscapes of society and the natural world and respond to the ideals and communities they see being built or altered.
Using a variety of techniques and materials, the work on view aims to express the forms and feelings of life in a world where nothing can be taken for granted. Together, the works strike a balance: emotive and intuitive gestures scream into an ever-darkening abyss while simultaneously telling the story through thoughtful and deliberate engagement about the political and social constructs. While there is a palpable sense of fear or weariness, it is often overshadowed by the artists’ diligence, resourcefulness, and hope for the future.
A portion of all art sales will be donated to Horizons for Homeless Children, an organization with concrete solutions to alleviate the uncertainty homeless children face every day.
About the Artists
Cathie Brenner’s mixed media paintings and collages incorporate rich colors with found images, words, and fabrics scraps, trim and clothing from her grandmother and mother. Her works respond to uncertainty by exploring her connections to her heritage and relationships while expressing feeling, memory, and balance.
For Lisa Goren, flux represents instability. She is drawn to the frozen corners of the globe. Painting ice that is often thousands of years old, she is intent on capturing glaciers that are constantly on the move. This push and pull between the ancient and the transitory compels her to try and share that moment.
Jane Feigenson confronts uncertainty in the world by cultivating authenticity and personal voice in her mixed media paintings and hand crafted garments. She creates works that engage with the history and heritage embedded in vintage textiles while focusing on exploring the hand and spirit of the artist as it reveals itself through the building up and scraping down of layers in a work of art.
Nancy Marks’ series investigates gentrification and the changing urban landscape. Using layered forms and colors, she expresses what she sees as the tensions between developers and communities as they struggle over values and land development.
Silvina Mizrahi presents a series of expressive, figurative sculptures. She states that “In times of uncertainty and constant change, I unconsciously sublimate my fears, making my sculptures dance and play in a calm and peaceful harmony."
Adrienne Shishko began making knitted sculptural works using recycled clothing and linens collected from her community in the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election. The project explores “the torn fabric of society” and contemplates transformation, adaptation, and shelter. The works are infused with the complex histories and identities of the individuals who used them and explore what it means to feel safe and secure.
