Join artist Zhiqian Wang and physicist Ping Gao for a conversation about traversable wormholes, multiverses, and Wang’s current art exhibition “Twins, Twilight, and Apple Tree” at Piano Craft Gallery.
The multiverse is the latest sci-fi obsession—from Marvel movies like Spiderman and Dr. Strange, to epic dramas like Everything Everywhere All At Once and Interstellar. But how do these stories compare to real science? Scientists and sci-fi lovers alike have wondered: can wormholes be used for time travel? How do they function? What kinds of multiverses are there? Can we know about them, and would they affect our lives?
Inspired by Wang’s exhibition, Wang and Gao will compare interpretations of the multiverse across science-fiction, science, and philosophy. Wang will bring her artistic and philosophical inquiries, while Gao will bring his expertise on theoretical physics such as string theory and quantum mechanics. Together, they’ll start a dialogue that bridges the languages of art, science, and philosophy and expands our perception of what’s possible beyond our world. The conversation will be followed by a Q&A.
This program is free to the public and presented in tandem with Zhiqian Wang’s solo exhibition “Twins, Twilight, and Apple Tree,” on view at Piano Craft Gallery through February 26.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Zhiqian Wang is an interdisciplinary artist working in sculpture, painting, video, sound, performance, and installation. Her current practice examines and expands our conception of material reality via ordinary language, narrative, and cinematic devices. Through her interests in physics and philosophy, she investigates concepts such as randomness, causality, rationality, games, and knowledge. Wang has collaborated with scholars and researchers across different fields of science. She currently lives and works in New York City.
Ping Gao is a postdoc at the Center for Theoretical Physics at MIT. His main interest in research covers many aspects of theoretical physics, including quantum gravity, quantum chaos, quantum information, and effective field theory for non-equilibrium systems. He is one of the discoverers of the traversable wormhole that is dual to many-body quantum teleportation. He also has a wide interest in dragon boating, origami, and philosophy.
