sol-smiling out loud
The Art of Listening: A solo show by DaNice D Marshall
Statement: My art is always intentional in the connectedness of people, as much to record the ordinary activities of African-American life, as well as to show the viewer that all people laugh and have moments of joy. Smiling Out Loud (SOL) is an acronym that I use a lot, to describe a non-verbal cue. I wonder “Can a smile be heard?” Probably, because when we smile, other people see us and smile back, that a warm human connection made. A familiar thread, a reminder that we are more alike, than we are different. My hope is that my art makes the viewer smile, just a little bit, at least on the inside.
Bio: DaNice D Marshall (pronounced Duh-NYSE) is a born writer, who lost her ability to write after a serious vascular disease led to hearing loss. That’s when she began to paint abstracts, as she describes it, to watch the paint dry. In 2017 her work evolved to the Black Portraiture art as a way to tell the stories that she could no longer write. Despite challenges, she triumphs and finds her voice through painting.
In addition to showcasing her work on a digital billboard in Boston’s theater district, DaNice’s work has been exhibited in venues, such as the NIU Art Museum, DeKalb, IL; Abigail Ogilvy Gallery, Boston; Piano Craft Gallery, Boston; and the New Art Trio, Newton, MA. Her work is featured in Naomi, a television series that aired on The CW Network and streaming on HBOMax.
DaNice lives with her husband, Ben, and their dog, Tigger outside of Boston.
