Delineation is an exhibit of three Boston-area artists whose works expand upon abstraction in often playful and irreverent ways. Each artist examines modern and postmodern strategies related to abstract painting and image-making in a highly personal manner, exploring color, shape, line, and pictorial space within the context of contemporary art and with a particular emphasis on making connections with the outside world.

The work of Santiago Hernandez shown here is part of a series of paintings titled Archiometries in which the artist explores the intersection between architecture, graphic design, geometric abstraction, and music. Having studied each of these disciplines, Hernandez realized early on that each comprises a type of universal language system. This has always been of particular interest to Hernandez who, as a Cuban-American, struggled early on with adopting the English language and found that drawing was the key to communicating across boundaries. As part of this series, Hernandez is currently working on a body of paintings inspired by buildings in and around Boston.

Paul Inglis’ prints are a playful take on the bold graphics of matchbox labels and vintage wooden toy design. These prints are unique in that each color shape is cut from an individually printed color grid and assembled like a jigsaw puzzle, securing the parts via chine collé to complete the composition. The grid system creates uniformity within the picture plane and serves as a guide in the process of cutting and assembling the parts with more accuracy. Inglis’ titles are based on memories of places and events but are purposefully left open to interpretation.

Matthew King’s works defy easy categorization and function as both paintings and

sculptures. These paintings confront the aesthetic and thematic boundaries developed by 20th century minimalism and hard-edged painting. Combining hard-edged abstraction with collaged images forces these works to teeter back and forth between picture/object and painting/sculpture. King works with found advertisements and images. Reacting to these images as preexisting conditions is at the core of King’s editing process-manipulating an advertisement and reestablishing the function of its content and injecting it into an otherwise austere formal practice. The result is something that speaks in an entirely different language that is poetic but also calculated.
