Bigfoot Broke My Sewing Machine

Myths and mythos are the ways in which we create stories to understand our histories. By creating and excavating our own myths and archetypes, we are able to address and investigate the histories which have created the world we live in now. We are able to understand the many facets which create "truth" through narrative. Through textiles, clay, and performance, Beckett Brueggemann, Kiara Reagan, Maya Greenfield, and Rocky Prull explore the many ways our histories influence where we are now, who we have become, and where we are going in an ever shifting country. Each artist has a relationship with quilting in their work: bringing together stories, piecing fabric, and engaging with textile traditions. We encourage visitors to add stitches and stories to our community quilt.

Two Monsters convene over a spindle of thread to unravel the truth of the Witch who wanders the depths of these forests. Over the course of drag, dancing, and fairytale, see what stories they spin!

Two characters, Beckett Brueggemann as Grendelin Drag and drag performer Mimolette as the Witch of the Woods, will tell the story of the Witch of the Woods. As the Witch spins a spindle of thread, Grendelin will tell the Witch's story through a spoken word audio and movement routine. Once the story has been told, the Witch will hand off the spindle to Grendelin who will begin to knit the thread. As Grendelin knits, the Witch will perform a more traditional drag dance to a mix of songs. The performance will conclude with a statement from Grendelin and an invitation for the audience to join in on forest festivities. The song "Monster Mash" will play and the two Monsters will lead viewers in the cotton eye joe line dance.

Kiara is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in textiles and sculpture. She has a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and lives and works in Boston.

My work in “Bigfoot Broke My Sewing Machine” is about the myths of the American Car and the American Cowboy and the freedom that they espouse. Both images are used to rally conservatism and individualism in the U.S., and both promise a masculine outlaw freedom that is estranged from reality. My work draws from my experience as a bike commuter and my dad's career at an auto body. I am inspired by country music, children's toys, long joyful bike rides, maternal craft traditions, and the work of American political historian Heather Cox Richardson. By using soft materials like quilts and embroidery, and playful images of bicycles and rainbow ponies, I satirize the hard seriousness of the Car and the Cowboy.
