Throwing a wrench at the monkey is how artist Domenic Esposito copes with unforgivable loss and injustice. Through the use of metal and paint, he symbolizes his commitment to exposing accountable parties, both examining individual authority and raising a fist to societal malfeasance. He begins with a type of visual shorthand and uses repetition with great calculation to remind us that the societal dilemmas that he presents are not going away, but merely multiplying under our watch.
His process is about elevating commonplace objects that once upon a time had naive functionality in our everyday environments and have now become for him, symbols of isolation, harm and loss. The repetitive objects that he paints and forms are subliminal triggers of pain, anger, loss, fear and calamity. Yet, they remain in stasis as they are relayed to the viewer.
In fact, this exhibition is an opus for Esposito, who boarded this unsolicited journey of collateral suffering years ago when his brother became an addicted to opioids. He takes us through his journey, using objects he has chosen to observe, isolate and repeat -- merging into a compassionate visual language that provides a point of entry into the world of addiction and human fragility. Discovering and working through his own fragility with the viewer, he explores just how far he can go in his shared observations, emotions and his ultimate demand for a reckoning.
During this month-long exhibit at Piano Craft Gallery, there will also be a few events with artists, authors and academics in connection to Domenic’s art and activism. See full lineup at The Opioid Spoon Project.
- Friday, Jan. 21 the Opioid Spoon Project will host a fundraiser event (5-9pm).
- Saturday, Jan. 22, noted journalist and author Sam Quinones, will discuss his latest book The Least of Us: True Tales of America and Hope in the Time of Fentanyl and Meth, which follows his previous book, the New York Times bestseller Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic, (2-3pm).
- Sunday, Jan. 23, Domenic will conduct a 2D Art with 3D Sculpture Workshop, co-sponsored by New England Sculptors Association (NESA).
- Thursday, Jan. 27, Exploring Art Therapy, to discuss the healing power of art, featuring Antonella Pirone, PHD, Director of Translational Pharmacology at Caesura Tx, SLP fellow and Alicia Ventura, Director of Special Projects & Research, Office-Based Addiction Treatment Program (OBAT) at Boston Medical Center. Sponsored by Professionisti Italiani a Boston (PIB), (6-8pm).
- Saturday, Jan. 29, Artist Talk with Domenic Esposito and Vox Clamantis Curator Diana Lada L’Henaff (6-7pm).
